World Council of Churches

8 February 2016

Dear Mr Lyim,

Greetings to you as you begin your new year!

We were saddened to learn of the earthquake in Taiwan on 6 February. A natural disaster of this magnitude at a time when so many gathered to be with family to celebrate the promises of the future makes this all the more tragic and painful. We received your relief update informing us of the number of lives lost, the many injured and the properties experiencing damage. Yet we are heartened to also hear of the relief efforts in which the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan is engaged. We are called as the church to be a source of recovery and restoration particularly at such times of loss and pain. We stand with you in your own pain and as you seek to bear witness to God’s love and care at this time.

We were pleased to receive you and your delegation here at the Ecumenical Centre on 2 February. It was good to learn even more about your church’s work in Taiwan. As we spoke at the time of the New Year to come in mere days, we could not have known that such a sad occurrence was soon to happen. Thank you again for your generous gifts of the crosses. As I communicated to you when you presented them, we hope that other churches from other regions will also share with the WCC such crosses that we can in turn share with still other churches and regions as a symbolic gesture for the strengthening of the fellowship in prayer and solidarity. It is in this spirit that I write to assure you that you, your church, and the people of Taiwan are being held in prayer by brothers and sisters within this global fellowship of churches. As we share the cross which you have graciously given, we shall invite others to pray with and for you as you continue to serve those in need particularly at this difficult time. We journey with you now and as we continue on the pilgrimage of justice and peace.

Yours in our common Lord,

Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit
General Secretary

Council of World Mission

Feb 9, 2016

Dear Rev Lyim Hong-Tiong,

Peng-an! With prayers and sincere best wishes in this time of devastation in Taiwan caused by the earthquake.

I write on behalf of Council for World Mission to express sympathy and solidarity with you, the membership of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan and the Government and people of Taiwan at this time of disruption caused by the earthquake that has ravaged your country, leaving many dead and others dislocated. We regret this sad news and assure you of our thoughts and prayers.

I imagine that this must be a difficult time for the PCT as it seeks to identify with those most badly affected by this catastrophe. In this regard, CWM stands ready to accompany you in this act of solidarity with your people. I would very much appreciate if you would let us know if/how we may be of immediate support to you in your efforts at being a presence of hope and healing in the community at this time.

In the meantime, we hold you and the entire country of Taiwan in our prayers, trusting God to still the storm, bringing peace to everyone and in particular, those who have lost loved ones, friends and property.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.

Sincerely,

Collin I. Cowan

Rev. Lyim Hong-Tiong,

General Secretary,

Presbyterian church of Taiwan.

Dear Brother in Christ,

I write to let you know of the concerns, prayers and sorrow of the United Reformed Church and its people, as we have followed the news from Tainan in these last few days. The sight of rescue crews working so persistently, and bringing people alive from the rubble even today, has been impressive indeed. We thank God for every life saved, and for all the good work of the hospitals as they attend to those who are injured. Yet we grieve with your nation that so many lives have been lost, and so many people badly hurt, by this earthquake.

On Saturday I visited briefly the Chinese congregation that meets in London under the leadership of Rev Chung Shou-Hui, to bring greetings and express concern. We have also had a visit from Jonah Chang, researching into church history, and he tells us that no-one has been injured at the Tainan Seminary.

Yet we know that the Presbyterian Church will be concerned for the whole community, and not just for its own people. Are your congregations involved in particular relief projects? If people from here ask about giving money, is there a straightforward way of doing so?

Please be assured of our friendship and prayers at this difficult time. We wish you and your people courage and wisdom as you share in the sorrow and in the care and help of these days.

With cordial Christian greetings,

John

Church of Scotland World Mission Council

08 February 2016

Dear Friends at PCT,

I was shocked and saddened when Is aw news of the earthquake that struck southern Taiwan last Friday. On behalf of the Church of Scotland I send your our condolences. The World Mission Council is sharing news via social networks and we will include news in our weekly news and prayer e-bulletin.

The people of Taiwan are use to earthquakes and tremors but this has been a strong quake. I realise questions are being asked about building standards in the apartment block that collapsed and it is a tragedy that failures in adhering to the building codes may have contributed to many of the deaths and casualties.

I know that PCT will do what it can to provide relief, shelter and support in the immediate aftermath of this disaster and in the longer term. Your church has much experience in responding to natural disasters. If there anyway that international partners can assist PCT in this work then please let me know.

Please know that many in Scotland are praying for Taiwan and the work of PCT today and ion the days ahead.

Sincerely

Sandy Sneddon
Asia Secretary
